Runs on the board – September 2013

Hello members, friends & colleagues

It’s been a busy start of the new financial year and whilst we have some challenges ahead (New government, amalgamations, new council & mayoral elections) there are some exciting opportunities. A lot of hard work has been done to enable unprecedented investment and renewal that is currently underway here in Fremantle.

In the last 2 years there have been more development plans, applications, approvals and completions than in any equivalent time since the America’s Cup with almost $ 1 billion in property investment in the pipeline.

The Chamber has been working hard to ensure we have the lobbying power to insist government listen to the business community. We have increased police presence through the street of Fremantle and seen a drastic improvement in reducing crime in the area by 24% year on year. The taxi issue on a Friday and Saturday night has also been addressed with ministers and we are pleased to say Fremantle will be getting a brand new taxi rank on Henderson Mall. This will see marshalled ranks and new technology implementation, increasing the efficiency and safety while reducing average wait times.

Our Digital Enterprise Program (DEP) is going from strength to strength with over 1,500 attendees having enjoyed the free training so far. Our target was 750 over two years so we have exceeded our target by 100% and we still have nearly a full year to go!

The next step after the DEP program is our “Socialnomics” diploma, working alongside FEC it will give our clients the opportunity to implement the learning from the DEP training and get accredited for it.

The Chamber has formed 2 new committees, an International Trade & Export Committee and a Cruise Ship Committee. These will help us improve our service to our exporters and ensure we are offering the very best experience for our cruise ship visitations.

We continue with our Round Table Series with guest speakers from Fremantle Hospital who spoke on the reconfiguration of the hospital and its impact on Fremantle.

Our Business Leaders Luncheons continue, having heard from Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, Peter Prendiville Chairman of Tourism WA and our very own Mayor Dr. Brad Pettit.

Together with the City of Fremantle and Fremantle BID we are collaborating on a new branding identity (Aspirational Fremantle)

We recently hosted the tall ships from Holland and The KRI Dewaruci from Indonesia. The Dewaruci Marching band performed through the street of Fremantle to take a Mayoral salute with hundreds of people enjoying the spectacle.

The chamber also hosted the Federal candidates forum together with the Fremantle society, Notre Dame and Oxfam.

We recently relaunched the 2013 Amateur Photographic Competition – Fremantle previously known as “Frame it Freo”. Our aim is to stimulate creativity and encourage aspiring photographers to “think outside the box”; inspire the shutterbugs to foster their talent with a yearly competition that provides a platform to showcase their art. This is also a great opportunity to promote Fremantle as an art and culture hub.

Finally, we have some very exciting offers for our members to enjoy! Up to 14% discount when combining Health, Car and Home from HBF, 10% discount from Rottnest Express and discounted rates from Anytime Fitness among other amazing offers.

The Fremantle Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly on your behalf to ensure Fremantle has a positive future! Together we are a powerful and influential force.

Farewell KRI Dewaruci!

This morning the Mayor and I along with the Indonesian Consul General farewelled the Good Will ambassador KRI Dewaruci. The ship has been here for just over a week & has provided Fremantle with much fun, colour and vibrancy.

The visit was a massive success culminating in a Parade through Fremantle last wednesday. The Fremantle Chamber of Commerce send the cadets & crew of the KRI Dewaruci fond farewell & good sailing. We look forward to welcoming them back to the Port City in the future.
